Applied Behaviour Analysis (ABA)

ABA (Applied Behaviour Analysis)  is a type of therapy that can improve social, communication, and learning skills through positive reinforcement.

Many experts consider ABA to be a standard treatment for children with autism spectrum disorder (ASD) or other developmental conditions. It is also used in the treatment of other conditions as well, including substance use, dementia, cognitive impairment after brain injury, eating disorders, anxiety and related conditions such as panic disorder, OCD, and phobia, anger issues.

ABA WITH US

Consultation and Assessment

  • First, Fix an appointment with us. We, in our first meeting, called SCREENING, will ask about your child’s strengths and abilities as well as things that challenge them.
  • We will spend some time interacting with your child to make observations about their behavior, communication level, and skills. We might also ask you to fill in a questionnaire on your child’s behavior during typical daily activities.
  • Effective ASD treatment looks different for every child, hence we as ABA therapists should design and program specific interventions that fit your child’s needs. We may also inform about integrating certain strategies into your home life.

Developing a Plan

  • We as BOARD CERTIFIED BEHAVIOUR ANALYST will use our observations from the initial consultation to create a formal plan for therapy. This plan should align with your child’s unique needs and include concrete treatment goals.
  • These goals generally relate to reducing problematic or harmful behaviors, such as tantrums or self-injury, and increasing or improving communication and other skills.
  • The plan will also include specific strategies for caregivers, parents and other people around your child can use to achieve treatment goals. This helps to keep everyone who works with your child on the same page.

Caregiver Training

We will teach you about strategies that will help to reinforce the work they do in therapy.

You’ll also learn how to safely avoid types of reinforcement that are less effective, such as giving in to tantrums.

Frequent Evaluation

As ABA therapists, we try to uncover causes of certain behaviors to help your child change or improve them. Over the course of therapy, we may adapt their approach based on how your child responds to certain interventions.

What’s the end goal?

The goal of treatment depends largely on the child’s individual needs.
However, ABA often results in children:

  • Showing more interest in people around them.
  • Communicating with other people more effectively.
  • Learning to ask for things they want (a certain toy or food, for example), clearly and specifically.
  • Having more focus at school.
  • Reducing or stopping self-harming behaviors.
  • hHaving fewer tantrums or other outbursts.
  • To speak and communicate.
